Greater Shepparton City Council, situated in the heart of the Goulburn Valley, is the fourth largest provincial centre in Victoria and has a well-developed economy due to its strong agricultural and irrigation base, with major industries related to food processing, manufacturing and transport. The Goulburn Valley is often referred to as 'The Food Bowl of Australia' as around 25% of the total value of Victoria's agricultural production is generated in this area.

Greater Shepparton has a population of approximately 65,000, and an expenditure budget in excess of $118 million. The population is culturally diverse with 9.9% of residents being born overseas. The area has excellent education, recreation, cultural, social and health facilities and tourism is a developing focus for the region.

Museum Technician – Shepparton Art Museum

Salary:  $67,741.44 per annum

Full Time – Permanent 

The Museum Technician – Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) is responsible for assisting the SAM Director and Curator to develop and implement, install and de-install, freight and crate artworks, exhibitions and community shows. 

Working within a diverse team, the Museum Technician will work with the SAM Collections Manager to care for and manage assets of the SAM permanent Collection and the co-ordination of off-site storage.  They will also liaise with all contractors for installation work and gallery furniture, artists where appropriate, Riverlinks regarding building maintenance and oversee OHS, chemical store compliance and risk assessments. 

SAM, a regional museum, holds one of Australia’s leading collections of historic and contemporary Australian ceramics along with a growing collection of historic and contemporary paintings, prints and works on paper. Established in 1936 the SAM Collection is recognised and celebrated as one of regional Australia’s finest art collections. The Museum is also highly regarded for its collection of Aboriginal art and its wide and varied educational and public programs.  SAM is currently transitioning from its current facility to a new landmark art museum in late 2020. 

To be successful in the role the Museum Technician will be tertiary qualified in Fine Arts / Visual Arts and have knowledge and experience in all facets of exhibition installation, de-installation and the preparation of artworks and objects for display.  An understanding of and experience in the care and appropriate storage of a gallery or museum collection is highly desirable, along with strong technical problem solving skills and a ‘can do’ attitude.  Openings, programs and education events will require the position to be available for after hours and occasional weekend work during the year.
